The RMIT LSS Junior Moot is the perfect introduction to mooting for the first year students (both post- graduate and undergraduate level) whether they decide to consider a career in advocacy or not. It is a chance to enhance their legal skills, advocacy skills, debating and public speaking skills. It is a highly recommended opportunity and a stepping stone to senior national and international competitions.
REFLECTIONS FROM OUR 2022 COLLEGE OF LAW AUSTRALIA X RMIT LAW STUDENTS' SOCIETY CHAMPIONS
Ali rahimi - winner
I'm a first-year student in the Juris Doctor program and when I first heard about mooting, I had no idea what to expect. When the opportunity presented itself, I signed up to participate in Criminal Law Junior Moot with my moot partner Charlotte Gillespie and I'm glad I did.
The experience turned out to be one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Starting the general rounds and slowly making our way to the semi-finals and finals. The adrenaline rush kept us on our toes all throughout the day going between the majestic courtrooms in the old magistrate building giving us a real feel of what it's like being in a real court room. Walking away as winners of the junior moot was a bonus! We learned a lot about advocacy and how to present a case in a court in front of judges. All are very useful skills to learn. I want to thank the RMIT LSS committee, College of Law and all the judges for providing such opportunities to students and enriching the university experience. I will be joining the next moot to apply the learnings from our first. Can't wait to see you there!

On Saturday, 30 July, I had the pleasure of participating in the RMIT LSS x College of Law Criminal Law Junior Moot with my moot partner, Ali Rahimi, and a range of other RMIT Law students. Before arguing our cases at the Old Magistrates Building, the mooting teams engaged in couching sessions in the weeks prior, where we received advice and support from Elliott Young and Elise Steegstra. We then used this advice to prepare written submissions for our case, which focused on the admissibility of illegally obtained evidence and appropriate sentencing.
On the day of the moot, I was continually impressed by the arguments of my fellow participants as well as the professional and supportive way they conducted themselves. I was also incredibly grateful for the feedback, advice and support provided by the judges. The experience of participating in the moot pushed me to analyse my advocacy skills and work with my partner, Ali, to refine and improve our arguments after each round. It provided all the participants with a fantastic hands-on opportunity to develop both our advocacy and legal reasoning skills. If you have the option to participate in a moot, I will highly recommend taking it. While it may seem daunting, the experience provides a practical forum to apply the knowledge gained from classes, as well as allowing you to gain and implement valuable feedback.
Thank you to the LSS and the College of Law for organising the experience for us. Well done and thank you to Paul Nicolaidis for all the effort and time that he poured into making the moot such an enjoyable and educational experience for us. Looking forward to the next one!
